2027 2nd Stage
2027 marks Magenta Theater’s 25th Anniversary Season, acknowledging the company’s legacy building community one stage at a time while also looking forward to an exciting new chapter as a performing arts center where people connect through shared stories, artistic expression, and community-building. This year, Magenta embarks on a special initiative focused on making connections between the company’s established values and the season themes. The first of six seasons highlighting a Magenta value will be Community, which is the cornerstone of Magenta’s purpose.
In addition to our Mainstage productions, the Season Selection Committee was tasked with something new: suggesting content for a brand new series at Magenta: 2nd Stage. These three micro-budget passion projects will run for two weeks and feature content that “we just had to produce”: a two-person exploration of the multi-verse, a poignant look at a community’s response to a hate crime, and a contemporary Irish drama. This will join Magenta’s other two community-driven series: Magenta Improv Theater and Magen-Tots, as well as Magenta’s First Friday events like Sidewalk Karaoke.
This season’s artwork was created through a collaboration between Magenta’s Managing Artistic Director, Caleb Bourgeois; Resident Photographer Bob Spink; and Graphic Designer Maya McFaddin Bourgeois. In an age of AI-generated artwork, we endeavored to create real photographic content utilizing our stage, lights, and stock props and costumes, and graphic layouts designed and created by real artists — celebrating our 2027 Season Value: Community, and the collaborations that make Magenta possible!

One relationship. Infinite possibilities. In how many universes would you love someone? Nick Payne’s Olivier award-winning Constellations is a play about free will and friendship; it’s about quantum multiverse theory, love and honey. Roland is a beekeeper. Marianne is a quantum physicist. What are their odds of falling in love? With infinite moments that can change the trajectory of a life, it’s anyone’s guess how cosmic collision is possible. This play moves from the question of “what if,” to a poignant picture of “what is.”

The Laramie Project presents a deeply complex portrait of a community’s response to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man living in Laramie, Wyoming. In October 1998 a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die and tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming. His bloody, bruised and battered body was not discovered until the next day, and he died several days later in an area hospital. His name was Matthew Shepard, and he was the victim of this assault because he was gay.
Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project made six trips to Laramie over the course of a year and a half in the aftermath of the beating and during the trial of the two young men accused of killing Shepard. They conducted more than 200 interviews with the people of the town. Some people interviewed were directly connected to the case, and others were citizens of Laramie, and the breadth of their reactions to the crime is fascinating. Kaufman and Tectonic Theater members have constructed a deeply moving theatrical experience from these interviews and their own experiences. The Laramie Project is a breathtaking theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.

It’s Christmas Eve, and Sharky has returned to Dublin to look after his irascible, aging brother who’s recently gone blind. Old drinking buddies Ivan and Nicky are holed up at the house too, hoping to play some cards. But with the arrival of a stranger from the distant past, the stakes are raised ever higher. Sharky may be playing for his very soul. The Seafarer is a chilling new play about the sea, Ireland and the power of myth.
